Adapting Toys and Play for Children with Disabilities

 

Who should attend: Special educators, early childhood educators, social workers, parents or caregivers, daycare providers, nannies, parks and recreation staff/camp directors, recreational therapists, child life specialists, pediatric therapists, librarians and any others who wish to enhance their skills in play for children with disabilities.
 
Part 1 - Monday, December 5 -- 10 AM – 3 PM
  • Gain an understanding of children with disabilities and how they play
  • Learn the principles of toy and play adaptations
  • Learn how to adapt books and early literacy
  • Evaluate and adapt games for children with disabilities
  • Gain knowledge in positioning children for successful play
  • Extensive free handouts and optional "Literacy is for Everyone" manual for an additional $50
  • Check in starts at 9:45 each day and that EI credit has been applied for and IACET CEU are included.

Part 2 - Wednesday, December 7 -- 10 AM – 3 PM
  • Using switches to help children with disabilities access play materials
  • Learn how to make a homemade switch
  • Learn how to battery interrupt toys for switch usage
  • Learn about assistive technology including switch adaptive toys and computers
  • Learn about apps and the iPad
  • Extensive free handouts and optional "Literacy is for Everyone" manual for an additional $50
  • Check in starts at 9:45 each day and that EI credit has been applied for and IACET CEU are included.

Lekotek Training Cancellation Policy
Due to the preparation time, materials costs and other unforeseen costs, National Lekotek center has the following cancellation policy: If training is cancelled more than 24 hours in advance then a full refund will be provided with only a $50 per day cancellation fee. If training is cancelled with less than 24 hours then no refund will be provided however an alternate person may attend that training for up to one year from that time with a $50 fee.
